The UN Climate Change Conference (COP-28) in Dubai officially commenced!

His Excellency Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment and Representative of Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, took part in the official opening ceremony of COP-28 on the morning of December 1, 2023. The summit drew attendees from 196 member countries, including business leaders, youth, indigenous scientists, journalists, observers, representatives of UN agencies, international organizations, NGOs, and other stakeholders, amounting to a total of 70,000 participants.

During the official opening ceremony, Prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, His Excellency António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, and His Majesety King Charles III, along with various world leaders, addressed the gathering. The keynote address outlined several key priorities:

1. Conduct a comprehensive study and evaluation of global greenhouse gas emissions (Global Stocktake) to restrict global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, in accordance with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

2. Secure $100 billion annually for climate change mitigation and adaptation activities.

3. Advocate for the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency.

4. Support funds to assist communities affected by the loss and damage caused by climate change.

5. Improve knowledge, capacity building, and technological change related to climate change.

The COP28 Climate Change Summit in Dubai this year exemplifies a strong commitment to addressing climate change under the slogan “Act more, speak less.” These efforts align seamlessly with the Royal Government of Cambodia’s dedication to clean energy and sustainable development, resonating with Cambodia’s call to “speak and act,” a commitment actively being put into practice.
