An Open Letter from a Foreign Visitor to Cambodia

To the People of Cambodia,

As a visitor to your beautiful country, I expected to be impressed by Cambodia’s magnificent temples, rich culture, and warm hospitality. I certainly was. But what left the deepest impression on me was something even more remarkable—a nation coming together to protect its environment.

Wherever I traveled, I noticed something that many countries still struggle to achieve: clean streets, clean public spaces, and communities that genuinely care for their surroundings. It was clear that cleanliness here is no longer simply a government initiative; it has become a shared responsibility embraced by people from all walks of life.

What impressed me most was the extraordinary partnership between Cambodia’s private sector and the Ministry of Environment. Businesses are not waiting for others to act. Shops, restaurants, hotels, factories, offices, and companies are cleaning their workplaces, maintaining the areas around them, caring for public spaces, and planting trees. They understand that protecting the environment is also an investment in their customers, employees, communities, and future prosperity.

I also learned that millions of Cambodians have joined the nationwide environmental movement. This level of public participation is inspiring. It demonstrates that lasting environmental change happens not through regulations alone, but when an entire nation chooses to act together.

A clean country attracts visitors. A green country attracts investment. A sustainable country creates opportunities for businesses and improves the quality of life for everyone.

I was equally encouraged to learn that illegal deforestation has been significantly reduced. This is an achievement worthy of recognition because forests are invaluable—they protect biodiversity, secure water resources, regulate the climate, and preserve Cambodia’s natural heritage.

At the same time, it is deeply disappointing that a small number of individuals continue to engage in illegal environmental activities. Such actions are not only unlawful but also shameful, as they undermine the hard work and dedication of millions of Cambodians striving to protect their country’s natural beauty. The selfish actions of a few should never overshadow the collective commitment of the many.

To those still involved in illegal deforestation or other environmental crimes, I offer this sincere appeal: choose a better path. Join the millions of Cambodians who are working hand in hand with the Ministry of Environment to build a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future. There is greater honor in protecting Cambodia’s natural heritage than in exploiting it.

To Cambodia’s business community, I extend my heartfelt appreciation. Every clean workplace, every clean street, every public area cared for, and every tree planted helps build a stronger nation. These are not merely environmental actions—they are investments in sustainable businesses, healthier communities, and a brighter future.

As I prepare to leave Cambodia, I carry with me more than wonderful memories. I leave inspired by a country where government, businesses, and citizens are increasingly united by a common purpose: protecting the environment for future generations.

My wish is simple. May this movement continue to grow. May more businesses join the Ministry of Environment. May more communities keep their streets and public places clean. May more families plant trees. And may every Cambodian take pride in helping build a nation where economic growth and environmental protection go hand in hand.

The strongest foundations for business and for life are built not only with investment and infrastructure, but with clean streets, healthy forests, fresh air, responsible citizens, and a shared commitment to protecting the place we all call home.

Cambodia is showing the world what is possible when a nation stands united.
